Why You Shouldn’t Stay in Blackpool for The Blackpool Illuminations

Boasting a 10-kilometer stretch, over 1 million bulbs, and a celebrity switch-on, you won’t want to miss out on the massive amount of fun that it is The Blackpool Illuminations switch-on weekend.

The exuberant seaside town of Blackpool will be going into full-swing as the Illuminations are switched on for 2018.

The Blackpool Illuminations

Blackpool Illuminations

Blackpool Illuminations

Known as ‘the greatest free light show on earth’, this year is set to be the brightest and most colourful yet.

Who is switching on the Illuminations?

Actor and singer Alfie Boe, who was born in Blackpool and raised in Fleetwood, will pull the famous switch and trigger the start of the 2018 Illuminations season at the official Switch-On concert on Friday, August 31.

How to get tickets for the switch-on

The original 20,000 free wristbands to attend the switch-on have now gone. However, special VIP packages are still available.

You can go to www.visitblackpool.com/switchon to get the full scoop and purchase tickets.

Why you shouldn’t stay in Blackpool for The Blackpool Illuminations

Although Blackpool will be a bright, colourful display of lights, it will be nice to get away from it for a while to relax and unwind. The streets will be packed, hotels will be crammed, and roads will be closed. We would recommend taking some time away from the bouncing streets of Blackpool and enjoy some quality relaxation just down the road in the stunning town of Lytham St. Annes.

It is amazing how a ten-minute car journey can take you to an incredibly different place with a whole new culture and beautifully scenic views. Avoid the hassle of finding parking with easy access to the Blackpool Promenade.

Where to Stay for The Blackpool Illuminations – Our HY Hotel Picks

During the 66 nights of Illuminations, Blackpool will be a beautiful display of bright lights. However, ‘the greatest free lightshow on earth’ will bring an incredibly large volume of people. If you want to get away from the heaving streets for a while, consider staying in a quiet town just down the road.

Generating £106 billion a year. Employing over 2 million people. Supporting thousands of businesses. Making up over 80% of the UK’s total visitor economy, England’s tourism sector is vibrant and vital. However, with great power comes great responsibility. All too often these big tourism companies tell you how to spend your well-earned holiday time, whether it be attending their sponsors’ events or even purchasing their ‘specialised’ itineraries.

Here at HY Hotels, we’re all about providing value for our guests, and to demonstrate that, here is a list of the best hand-picked free travel apps that will make your holiday time management that much less stressful and even increase your traveling productivity.

Increase Your Traveling Productivity With These Free Hand-Picked Apps

#1 Waze Navigation – Free – IOS DownloadAndroid Download

Increase Your Traveling Productivity

Waze

Waze is a community-based map and navigation app that allows users to share real-time data about traffic congestion, accidents, speed limits, and other crucial information that gives drivers the ability to reach point a to b in the least time possible.

This is actually the first navigation app that caused me to completely switch over from the in-built IOS maps app and I can honestly say that I have never looked back since doing so. With information such as road closures and traffic conditions, I can easily navigate areas of the country that I’m not familiar with, in the quickest way possible.

The Israeli start-up app took everything that the inbuilt maps did well, and drastically improved upon it. It was so good that Google bought it.

#2 Trip Advisor – Free – IOS DownloadAndroid Download

Increase Your Traveling Productivity

Trip Advisor

It wouldn’t be a comprehensive guide without mentioning the king of establishment review apps. Looking for an affordable hotel for the night? A quiet place for breakfast? A fancy restaurant for dinner? A local attraction? Trip Advisor has it all.

Need to make a last minute booking, or just looking for something to do? Boot up your Trip Advisor app and you are greeted with information on the quality of hotels and restaurants at your fingertips.

With a wealth of reviews and a clean user interface, Trip Advisor is the perfect app when you need to do a quick search for a place to go. You can even go on the app in on your free time and save pages for future trips.

#3 Uber – Free – IOS DownloadAndroid Download

Increase Your Traveling Productivity

Uber

This one is more for the city goers. Uber charges a base fare of £2.50 as well as 15p per minute and £1.25 per mile. There have been numerous studies on whether or not Uber is cheaper than your standard black cabs. With Uber, a 2 mile, 10 minute Journey on a Monday evening in London would set you back £6.50 whereas the same journey with a black cab would cost you around £8.60 – £13.80. If you’re looking to save a bit of money and meet some pretty cool people, Uber is a must have if you’re visiting a big city or looking to increase your traveling productivity.

All you need to do is download the free app and signal for a ride and within a few minutes, you will have a car ready to take you to your destination. You are given basic information about your driver for security reasons and you are automatically charged so you don’t have to worry about carrying cash in the city.

#4 TripIt – Free – IOS DownloadAndroid Download

Increase Your Traveling Productivity

TripIt

Going on a long break and making lots of plans along the way? Forward your reservations to TripIt and it will add it to an automated itinerary. This takes away all the hassle of having to look back through emails and call logs to find out what time you booked that restaurant for last month.

The free IOS app allows you to sync it with your calendar and mail application, and it will import the information into your itinerary that you can share with anyone.

#5 Pocket – Free – IOS DownloadAndroid Download

Increase Your Traveling Productivity

Pocket

Do you ever see a really interesting article and don’t have time to read it, tell yourself that you will read it later, only to completely forget about it? Pocket allows you to save all those great reads so that you can catch up on long journeys. Take a break from social media and give your brain some exercise by pre-planning your free time.

Pocket has unlimited storage, organised tags, and one-click saving on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox to help increase your traveling productivity.

18 Secret Travel Tips I Learned From Working at a Hotel Management Company

I had always been interested in secret travel tips, but it wasn’t until I started at HYHotels that I realised just how much could go wrong when you’re traveling without a plan. I have compiled a list of 18 essential tips that will not only ensure that your holiday goes smoothly, but will also make it a much more enjoyable experience – not to mention saving you some extra spending money.

Secret Travel Tips

1. Eat where the locals do, not where looks good.

You will often find that some places are geared towards attracting tourists. These are the places that the locals tend to avoid due to more experience with the local cuisine.

2. Ask hotel staff what the charge should be for taking a local taxi to/from your destination.

This stops taxi-drivers trying to overcharge you as a tourist.

3. The hotel staff are your best friends.

If you’re looking for something interesting to do off the beaten path, ask them. Need directions? Ask them. Best food in town, they know.

4. Place orders with supermarkets in the local area.

This way you can pick up your order when you arrive and don’t have to worry about packing certain items.

secret travel tips

5. Unpack as soon as you get to your hotel.

This will get you acquainted with your hotel room, which will make it feel more like home. It will also clear the clutter that always inevitably covers the hotel room and clears your mind of unwanted stress.

6. Stick to a routine.

This helps alleviate stress and makes you feel more organised. You know you’re body and mind best so do what works for you.

7. Read up in advance what the local customs are, and do those.

Embrace the difference and participate for the full experience.

8. Make a habit of exploring a part of the city/town on foot.

Go a different direction each day and you will soon be surprised with how much the area has to offer.

secret travel tips lake

9. Learn the vocabulary.

Depending on where abouts in the country (or world) you’re visiting from, there can be some distinct vocabulary differences that mean one thing in one place and another somewhere else. It is advised that you do a bit of research on the area and find out if they use their own dialect for certain things. You may even learn some new secret travel tips from the locals.

10. External battery pack to charge your phone while you are out and about.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people run out of battery whilst exploring the area. Being lost in an unknown area with no phone can be a disaster so always come prepared to avoid this.

11. If you wear prescription glasses or contacts, bring an extra pair as a back-up in case you lose or break the ones you’re wearing.

You may not have access to a replacement pair of glasses whilst you are on holiday so stay prepared and bring a back-up.

12. If you’re planning on buying clothes or souvenirs, leave space and bring an extra bag to ensure that you don’t run out of space when you’re re-packing to go home.

Nesting a smaller empty bag inside your main luggage can be a great idea so that you can fill the bag with new purchases and carry it separately.

13. If you have gadgets, charge them overnight before leaving.

Download google maps and offline maps as your phone will be your best friend when it comes to directions and finding more secret travel tips.

14. Visit events in the local area in that you are interested in.

This is an easy way to bond with people over shared interests or hobbies and can even lead to life-long friendships.

15. Plan for the worst-case scenario.

It’s unlikely that anything will go wrong in your travels but it never hurts to expect the worst. Assume you will lose your bag with everything in it and plan for it. This will ensure that you are not caught off-guard if anything was to happen. Make a copy of your documents, scan them and email them to yourself. Include a contact list in case you lose your phone and need to call someone.

secret travel tips passport

16. If you’re traveling abroad, make sure you disable data roaming on your phone as this can lead to unwanted expenses.

We have all heard the horror stories of getting billed hundreds of pounds because they forgot (or didn’t know) to turn data roaming off so make sure to double check that it is off before you travel abroad.

17. Call your bank and tell them that you are going on holiday and for them to expect payments from abroad.

Some banks will refuse the processing if you do not inform them and you may be stuck without being able to pay for anything for the duration of your trip.

18. Take pictures, create memories.

Can you remember everything you did on every trip you have ever been on? Me neither. Make sure to capture the beautiful moments that you have on your trip so you can look back on them at a later date.

Hotel Guide for Booking a Hotel in Lytham St Annes for Lytham Festival

5 Things to look for when booking a Hotel near Lytham Festival

With Lytham Festival on 18th-22nd July 2018, you need to make sure that you have somewhere to stay during the 5 days of great music.

With great music on each of the 5 days, you want to make sure that you don’t miss anything. This article is to assist you in finding a hotel for Lytham Festival.

The line-up for the 18th-22nd July 2018 consists of artists such as George Ezra and Rae Morris and pop groups of the likes of Steps and Bananarama.

Going to a festival is always exciting, but whether it’s one day or the whole week,  you can’t forget to sort out your accommodation. Here are 5 Things to look for when booking a Hotel for Lytham Festival.

Free WiFi

The first essential thing you’ve got to have is inclusive free WiFi. You don’t want to stay in a hotel where you can’t stay up-to-date with the latest festival news and have access to our daily updates for the event on our Twitter page. Free Wifi is essential in a Hotel for Lytham Festival. It’s 2018, all hotels should be offering free WiFi, but surprisingly, they don’t.

Gym & Spa / Pool

Another thing to keep your eye out for when booking a hotel for Lytham festival is a Gym & Spa. There’s nothing quite like kicking back and relaxing after a long day of feel-good music, truly the perfect end to a perfect day. You should make sure that the hotel you book either has an inbuilt spa on the premises or has access to one near-by so that you can take full advantage of the facilities.

Bar

There are Bar’s located at the festival so you can stay ‘hydrated’ throughout the event, but what happens after? Most people will either want to keep the party going or have a few more before calling it a night. What better place to have a couple drinks than a bar located in the same building as your room? Get yourself a Hotel for Lytham Festival and keep the party going all night.

Restaurant

There’s no getting away from the fact that you’ll be starving at the end of a fun-fuelled day. When booking your hotel for Lytham Festival, make sure that they have a restaurant that serves both hot meals and light snacks to keep you going.

Parking

Parking at the event can cost you £20 for an on-the-day spot. Pick a hotel that you can park your car at and is still close enough to have a nice walk down to the festival, giving you an extra £20 to either keep in your pocket or spend on refreshments while you’re there. If you don’t fancy the walk, getting a taxi there and back from a local Hotel will still work out cheaper than the parking fee (unless you book a spot in advance).

Booking a Hotel for Lytham Festival

Now you know what you’re looking for, it’s time to have a look at some Hotel’s to see if they fit the requirements. When booking a hotel in Lytham St Annes for the Festival, you need to look out for two key features: Reviews and Accommodation.

Reviews

Before you book a hotel in Lytham St Annes for the Festival you’ll want to check the reviews across several booking sites. The first I would recommend would be TripAdvisor. TripAdvisor is great because all of the reviews are from previous guests and can be filtered by specific facilities. Interested in what people think about the swimming pool at The Chadwick Hotel? No problem.

The second website I would recommend for checking reviews would be Google My Business. Simply by searching the hotel name in Google, you will get an information box on the right hand of your screen that shows the location, FAQs, facilities, and reviews. People who are thinking about visiting the hotel can ask questions and previous guests can respond with their experience.

Last but not least, I would recommend having a look at the Facebook page for the hotel. One of the most common places for leaving reviews is directly on the Facebook page. You can filter the reviews by particular words or phrases in order to compare facilities against other hotels.

Accommodation

Single rooms

Single rooms are designed to accommodate a solo traveler. The rooms are usually the same size as a double but will come at a reduced rate.

Double rooms

This option is for two guests sharing the same bed.

Twin rooms

Twin rooms are for guests who are sharing a room but with two separate beds.

Family rooms / Triple rooms

A family room will usually consist of either three beds, one large bed and one small bed, or two beds and a sofa bed. You are best checking with the hotel before booking to see what system them follow.

Apartment

If you’re booking an apartment then you will usually get a fully fitted kitchen with an oven, hob and fridge freezer, and cooking accessories. You will also get a seperate bedroom and bathroom, complete with digital televisions.

Now you know what you’re looking for, here are our HY Hotels that check all the boxes.
